One of the main goals of the project was the development of a prototype of a Microelectronic Automotive Roadmap while integrating all partners of the value chain. The final document is now available and outlines a comprehensive strategy for deriving future market needs, use cases, system models, and requirements for the automotive microelectronics industry. Through an in-depth exploration of technological trends and collaboration models, the roadmap prototype provides a blueprint for accelerating the development cycles of automotive systems. By fostering stronger cooperation across the entire value chain – from OEMs to semiconductor suppliers – this roadmap helps to navigate the increasing complexity of automotive systems, driven by electrification, software-defined vehicles (SDVs), and the rising demand for computing power.

From a roadmapping perspective, it is crucial to promote the newly proposed collaboration model among OEMs. This model focuses on creating a more integrated and cohesive development environment, where technological advances and market needs are communicated more effectively across all tiers. By marketing this model within the automotive sector, we can ensure that it becomes a foundational tool for driving future innovations and reducing time-to-market for automotive systems.

Lessons learned

The main “lesson learned” was, that “roadmapping” can never be a static process. Within the six years of the GENIAL! project, we faced permanent changes like never before: disruption in the automotive industry, pandemic, disrupted supply chains, natural disasters due to climate change, geopolitical crisis, you name it.

“Roadmapping” therefore can only be a continuous approach, where all assumptions made are constantly evaluated regarding their actual validity. New assumptions might have to be integrated. This requires a seamless roadmapping flow from the scenarios to the microelectronic component. A roadmap document can only be a snapshot made at a certain point in time.

The methods and tools developed within the GENIAL! project provide such a seamless flow, which however has to be filled with life.
